The process of psychospiritual
integration is learned from a willingness to experience "inner work."
Through a recognition of both the symptoms in
our outer life and the symbolic processes unfolding
from within, this process accesses both our psychological and our spiritual
nature. Most people are more familiar with the ways of psychology
and less familiar with the ways of spirit. For it is through the less-known
processes that access the collective unconscious mind from within, including
the Mind of our Creator-God, that we open to direct spiritual experiences.
We learn to recognize these numinous processes as "legitimate"
and essential to our healing. [excerpt from EMBODYING
SPIRIT, pg. 105]
Psychospiritual Integration is the blending of a psychological well being and a spiritual essence into one whole individual who can function as an integrated Self. Wholeness occurs when both psychological principles (relating to the ego) and spiritual principles (soul) come together. Psychospiritual Integration begins to happen naturally when the personality and soul meet, each honoring the other for its natural way of being. And this meeting happens in the heart. Therefore, guides for this type of work must be open-hearted people. Psychospiritual Integration merges the logical scientific findings of modern thinking with ancient wisdom, which emphasizes intuition, dream work, revelations, inspirations, spiritual practices, and other elements of the unconscious mind and inner life. It deals with the curative artsthose processes that activate and involve the whole Self in therapeutic work. Methods such as musical guided imagery, mandala drawing, mask-making, working with clay and sand trays, sacred ritual, psychodrama, myth making, movement, breathwork, group chanting, singing and play are all aspects of the curative arts. By honoring our innate wholeness, Psychospiritual Integration becomes a "psychology of completion" for ending an old cycle and making fresh beginnings." The fundamental premise that Psychospiritual Integration is important because we are spiritual beings leads to another basic concept for healers of the future: Human beings have an innate urge toward personal growth, to evolve through deeper self-knowledge and to feel that they are valuable elements within the grand scheme of things. We all have a built-in inner drive that moves us toward our full awakening and natural expression. Just as plants turn toward the sun, we naturally feel compelled to keep moving "toward the light" for our own blossoming as a person, evolving toward our species' fruition. We somehow sense our interconnectedness with the universe and all its creatures. It is perfectly human for us to want to open up to our divine nature, to transcend mundane life, to become whole.
