THE OBSERVER SELF

A Guided Imagery Exercise

Use this exercise when you feel it is important to "rise above" and get outside an emotional reaction you are having to a situation. It enables you to see it from a wider point of view (from the standpoint of Reality rather than personal reality),

Please read about how to safely practice Guided Imagery
before beginning this exercise.

Go within and picture yourself in an emotional scene that is representative of a current problem. Guide yourself (or a friend) with these kinds of statements:

Be aware of how you are feeling as you involve in the scene … Notice the look on your face and on the faces of those involved with you … Be aware of the kind of energy that is in the air as you involve in this …Notice your body movements …Be aware of the intentions of yourself and others involved …the message you're trying to get across to the other(s) … Now, just feel for a moment the very essence of this experience, as though it is happening now … just be with that for while …

Put on some quiet, meditative, wordless music now, if possible.

Now, rise above yourself … all the way up into the sky … look down on the scene you left behind and see it in its entirety … Notice what you are doing … Notice how the other(s) are reacting to you … Be aware of the context within which the scene is occurring … the role you and others are playing out, the place it's happening … this particular time in history … in the city you live … this culture … this age …

Now, very slowly allow yourself to descend back into the scene you've been witnessing … Re-enter your body and begin acting out this scene based on what you saw from above … Notice any changes you are making in how you are relating to the situtation … Notice any changes in others … Be aware of how your body now looks and feels … Be aware of any insights into the situation you are having … Be especially aware of the needs the other(s) have, or what is motivating their behavior, and notice your reactions to them now …

Allow this scene to come to an end in whatever way you wish to resolve the matter for now …

Slowly open your eyes and come back to this reality

Special notes about processing this imagery: Pay special attention to the difference in how you felt from above as compared to being totally involved down below.

If you have not already read about how to process your imagery overall, it would be good to do that now.
