COPING AND INTEGRATION STRATEGIES
FOR THE TERROR ATTACKS ON NEW YORK CITY
by Krisann McCormick

Dear Friends...

The recent terrorist actions against our nation have left an indelible mark on our lives, our families, and our world, as we know it. We all know the events that have transpired. And, within the recesses of our own bodies we also know in some way, some how that this is only "the beginning".

Many of us felt the foreshadowing of symptoms within our bodies days, weeks and even months before the first plane exploded into the World Trade Center on September 11th. Those symptoms may have manifested in the form of tiredness, lethargy, nightmares, sleeplessness, headaches, and heart palpitations, even some low-grade form of panic or anxiety. There may have been tears of sadness or unexpected outbursts of anger. All without the benefit of a ‘logical’ reason. Our bodies are natural barometers and are connected to the consciousness of this earth and to humanity in such a way that our logical minds cannot understand or comprehend. This is a form of "knowing" that we often neglect because our societal conditioning has deemed it unworthy or of little value.

As the Eupsychian model espouses, "the only way out is through". So, how are you responding to the crisis within your own body, heart and soul? How are you allowing the full expression of what is seeking release? Are you aware right now of places in your physical and emotional body where the memory and the impact of the events on September 11th still reside? Are you in touch with it? Do you know it exists and waits for attention?

Whether we directly lost a loved one, friend or associate to this recent tragedy, our individual work is to hold ourselves accountable for how we are and will respond in each and every moment to influence the healing and ultimate outcome of this event in ourselves and upon our world. A piece of the puzzle is to simply "allow" the full content of conflicting thoughts, feelings, emotions, uncertainties, questions, answers and hopes. A piece of the puzzle is to gently hold the "both/and" of outrage and compassion for your enemies and for the frustration residing within you. A piece of the answer is to surrender to the heartache, grief, turmoil, doubt, uncertainty and chaos within. Dance it. Journal. Write a letter to a loved one. Forgive someone. Forgive yourself. Move into the silence. Allow that inner sacred space to inform you and then, honor whatever comes. More tears, more rage, more confusion, more hope, more compassion, more forgiveness.

In our society, there is a prevalent tendency to edit ourselves, to filter our emotions and monitor our process so that we can function, be OK and "fine" in the every day world. Granted, it’s important to move forward with our lives, to get on with the business at hand but not at the expense of our well-being.

It is only through the process of allowing each and every conceivable emotion, sensation, confusion, heartache and rage that our personal and collective healing can occur. So perhaps, the bigger and more important question to hold is how are we responding to the war within our own psyches? Contained within that question may lie the resolve the world so desperately needs.
